
Winner in General Scholarship on April 4th, 2010
Lan, a senior, is a top student, who was accepted into Germantown High School's International Baccalaureate (IB) Program in the ninth grade. IB is a worldwide symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. The student who satisfies its demands demonstrates a strong commitment to learning both in terms of the mastery of subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a competitive world. This program, which exists in 124 schools around the world, has a rigorous curriculum. Lan, who holds a 3.87 grade point average, is one of 19 students who will graduate in May. She speaks three dialects of Chinese and is taking her fourth year of Spanish. Lan and her family immigrated to the United States when she was 9-years-old. None of the family spoke English. Through her perseverance, work ethic and positive attitude, Lan now speaks English fluently. Lan is a member of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, National Art Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and secretary of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. She participated in Mock Trial and won the role of "Best Witness." Lan is vice president of Christ Living in Christian Kids. She also is a member of Interact, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and International Club, which promotes different cultures and languages. She participated on a Can Construction Team at the University of Memphis' Engineering Day. She also has published a poem in a creative writing competition. In addition, Lan volunteers in the community. She has run in the Race for the Cure, a March of Dimes Race and Race for Education. She volunteers as a tutor for ESL students at Southwind Elementary School. She also teaches Chinese to others.
