
Winner in English & Literature on February 28th, 2010
Gracie, a senior, is an outstanding student who takes pride in writing. She holds a 101 weighted grade point average and scored 28 on the ACT. She received a 33 on the English portion of the test and a 35 on the Reading section. Her English skills have been recognized school wide. She is part of the school's award-winning newspaper staff. Her sponsor praises her style and learning ability saying, "When I make a suggestion about Gracie's writing style, she will come back the next day with a new draft that completely captures the spirit and letter of my suggestion." Gracie also is a top researcher. Gracie's talent has resulted in her writing the front page stories for several issues of the paper. For the first issue, she wrote the lead story on the swine flu. She also wrote a story on plagiarism, an important issue for high school students. Gracie received a writing award for a poem she wrote last year commemorating 9/11. Gracie consistently makes the Principal's List and the Honor Roll. She won highest GPA awards in 9th and 11th grade Honors English. She is a member of the National Honor Society and will be named a Hernando High School Intellectual. She also has been a member of the Tiger band for seven years and was section leader of the French horns the last three years. During 10th grade, she was one of two Hernando students who made the prestigious 2008 Mississippi Lions Band. This award brought honor and respect to the school's band program. She traveled to New York and Washington with that band. Gracie is a member of the Green Tigers Club, which strives to help the school "go green." The club's efforts helped others realize the importance of recycling. Gracie has volunteered in the community at a local veterinary clinic. By watching the professionals, she learned the significance of providing services to a community filled with pet lovers.
