Ian Michalak - St. George's Independent School

Winner in General Scholarship on October 10th, 2010

Ian, a senior, is an outstanding student and competitive soccer player. He holds a 4.61 weighted grade point average. He is driven by a desire to learn. He scored 33 on the ACT, 2140 on the SAT and recently was named a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Although he hopes to play professional soccer one day, he still plans to pursue an engineering degree with post-graduate study. Ian is a member of the National Honor Society, National History Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. He is active with the Ethical Literacy Team and Global Citizenship Team. He also chairs the executive committee of the school’s Peer Leadership Council (PLC), a group of 11th and 12th graders chosen by the faculty to mentor younger students at St. George’s. The PLC works with middle school advisory groups to connect with students and to talk with them about making the right choices. In addition, Ian is captain of the varsity soccer team and a peer tutor. He is a member of the leadership team for Bridge Builders, a group of students from schools around the city that concentrate on three focus areas - diversity appreciation, community action, and leadership. In 2009, Ian made a trip to an orphanage in China with the Philip Hayden Foundation. He also has worked on several community service projects with the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf, Special Olympics and the Ali Mills 5K. He has participated in service activities with the Notre Dame Club and with the Tennessee Rush, his competitive soccer team.
