
Winner in General Scholarship on April 4th, 2010
Karen, a senior, is a top student who enjoys learning. She holds a 4.41 weighted grade point average and scored 29 on the ACT. Karen excels in challenging classes which include AP English Literature and Composition and Dual Enrollment French IV through Christian Brothers University. She also will receive college credit for a University of Memphis physics class that she took on her own. Karen is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned a spot on the Summa Cum Laude Honor Roll all four years of high school. She has participated in the U of M's Wordsmith writing competition for four years and advanced to the finals twice. She received a first place trophy this year. She also has won two Certificates of Success on the National French Exam. Karen has assumed leadership roles in the music and liturgical ministries of IC's high school and cathedral. She is a four year member of the hand bell choir and serves as the director's aide for the elementary students' hand bell choir. She also is an altar server. She worked diligently on the French Club's Haiti Mission Project which sent funds to purchase eyeglasses and other essentials to IC's adopted parish there. A voracious reader, Karen has shared her love of reading with elementary students and spearheaded a successful book drive for the elementary school's library and classrooms. Karen served as a People to People Ambassador last summer, traveling to France, Italy and Greece. In Greece, she participated in an ecological project to rescue and study sea turtles. Locally, she helped conduct a People to People school supply drive for patients at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Karen is an enthusiastic member of the varsity bowling team.
