Winner in Science on March 28th, 2010
Megan, a senior, is a top student who has a passion for the sciences. She holds a 4.52 weighted grade point average and scored 33 on the ACT. While taking AP Chemistry, she was diagnosed with arthritis, which meant she could no longer play volleyball or participate in similar athletic activities. Megan would not allow this chronic illness to dictate the terms of her life. She committed herself to all of the school's athletic teams by working to start a student trainer program that has flourished. As her interest in this field grew, Megan applied to Vanderbilt University's selective PAVE program for students interested in engineering, pre-med, science or technology. She was selected and the six week intensive experience allowed Megan to learn critical theory and laboratory skills in the biomedical fields, including lab work in biomechanical engineering and genetics using gel electrophoresis. Working with the athletic trainers, she learned more about the intricacies of evaluation and treatment and decided to design a sports medicine curriculum for her Senior Independent Study. For her work, the faculty review panel awarded her the highest distinction a student can earn. Megan is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Honor Societies for Spanish, Science, History and English. She received the 2009 Cory Horton Award for Perseverance, the 2009 Sewanee Excellence in Writing Award, the 2006 Reflection of Light Award and the 2009 Year-End Spanish Award. She also received the designation of AP Scholar. Megan has been a varsity cheerleader and member of the softball and volleyball teams. She participated in Mock Trial and is a member of the Small Ensemble Choir. Megan traveled to Australia as a People to People Ambassador in 2005. She is active at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. She serves on the OLPH Youth Commission Board, the City of Germantown Youth Advisory Commission Board and is a Lector, Altar Server and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Eucharist at OLPH Catholic Church.
