Melyssa, a senior, is an outstanding student who has taken a rigorous course load of science classes. She holds a 4.35 weighted grade point average and scored 30 on the ACT. She has taken Chemistry, Advanced Placement Chemistry and Physics. One of the top academic students at the school, she will be named a “Senior Intellectual” this year. In addition, she has taken AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition and AP Calculus. She has earned high enough scores on AP exams to earn college credit. She also received the honor of highest GPA in computer applications. Melyssa has been inducted into the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. She has been a member of the Science Club for three years and helped plan and build a Science Club float for the Homecoming Parade. She also inspired and generated an interest in science among her classmates by participating in several science-related projects. Melyssa worked on the Toshiba project where students reinvented and improved anything technological from appliances to electronics. She also conducted an experiment concerning the velocity and acceleration of rides at the fair using science and math skills. Another experiment tested invisible inks to see which one worked better. Perhaps the most exciting project she did was a Rube Goldberg device which used marble drops, pendulums, pulley systems and dominoes to pour a glass of water. Away from the classroom Melyssa worked with her father to rebuild a bus and learned first aid and other doctoring skills to help with her five horses. The AP Chemistry teacher chose her to be a Teacher’s Aide, setting up labs and helping with experiments. Melyssa is one of those unsung heroes who quietly goes about her work doing the right thing in a cheerful, positive way.
