
Winner in Mathematics on January 30th, 2011
Daniel, a senior, is an excellent student who is able to balance a rigorous course load with many outdoor activities, athletics and community service. He holds a 4.28 weighted grade point average and earned top scores of “5” on both AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C: Mechanics exams. He scored a 33 on the ACT and 2160 on the SAT. Daniel was a 2009 University of Tennessee Pro2Serve Math Contest Award Winner. He received a $16,000 scholarship to UT-Knoxville for placing in the top 10 out of approximately 600 students. As a junior, he placed sixth in the West Tennessee TMTA (Tennessee Math Teachers Association) exam in the category of Calculus and Advanced Topics. An Eagle Scout, Daniel has earned bronze and gold palms, which are awarded after completing additional work over and above the requirements for Eagle. Last summer, he worked as a computer intern for DSG, Inc., learning how to install servers and assist clients. He also was awarded a full scholarship to attend the University of Mississippi’s 2010 Summer College for High School Students. He maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average and earned six hours of college credit in psychology and logic. Daniel has been inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. He has participated on the Math Team, Quiz Bowl Team and Science Olympiad Team. An active mentor and tutor, Daniel believes in being a part of children’s lives as well as teaching them to give back to the community. He has led a team of Boy Scouts in several projects for Brinkley Heights Urban Academy, a school for at-risk, inner city children. He also has worked in homeless shelters and participated with a work group for Hurricane Katrina victims.
