Winner in Music on March 21st, 2010
George, a senior, is a top student and talented musician. He holds a 3.4 unweighted grade point average and scored 31 on the ACT with a 34 in the English and Reading sections. He has taken a challenging course load filled with Honors and Advanced Placement classes. George received the President's Education Award for Outstanding Achievement. George has studied piano for ten years and trumpet for six years. He received high honors for eight years from the National Piano Guild and received Superior ratings at the Tennessee Piano Guild state competition. He is the principal trumpet player for the Memphis Youth Symphony. He currently performs in two choirs, a band and an ensemble group with his church. He is a five-year participant in All-West Band. He currently represents Houston High School and Tennessee as a member of the Army All-American Band. In addition, George has danced for four years with the school's German Folk Dancing Group, sung with a German a cappella men's group and acted with a German class ensemble. For his efforts, he won several awards at the University of Memphis Foreign Language Fair. In 2008 George was selected as the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador. He also was selected as a Hall of Fame senior. George was a participant in the Congressional Student Leadership Conference and a recipient of the PTA State Citizenship Essay Award. He also was inducted into the Beta Club. He was selected for and attended the Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts for trumpet and was named first chair in the orchestra. George also is a member of the Germantown Youth Symphony Orchestra and was selected to perform at the Kiwanis Club Young Artist Competition. George also sings with the Germantown UMC Youth Choir, performed with the Handbell Choir, plays keyboards with the Youth Praise Band and plays trumpet in the GUMC Brass Ensemble.
