Matthew Sloan - Germantown High School

Matt, a senior, is an excellent student and tireless worker. He holds a 3.9 weighted grade point average and scored 30 on the ACT. His name consistently appears on the Honor Roll. He is a member of the Beta Club and the 30 & Above Club. He is a self-starter, bright and imaginative. He is the first person to volunteer when a project is started and the last person to leave, always making sure the job is done. As General Manager of Germantown Community Television (GHS-TV), the on-campus three million dollar community access television studio, Matt oversees the daily activities of a 50-person student crew and coordinates the activities of numerous adult volunteers who use the studio facility. Matt works diligently on a daily basis to make sure everything functions correctly. In addition Matt directs several shows including the station’s longest running weekly talk show, Crosstalk. This program won several first place awards from the Alliance for Community Media as “best local talk show.” Matt also shoots, edits and often serves as a reporter on student-centered television packages. He recently completed a piece, shot on location, which focused on the aftermath of the Gulf Oil spill. Matt also maintains and regularly updates the station’s website. He works with city officials to create weekly live feeds of City Hall meetings. On the technical side, he is in charge of typesetting the 150 page souvenir playbill and other brochures and flyers that the theatre creates. He also is a singer in the chamber choir and had one of the leading roles in the prize-winning musical, “Parade.” Matt finds time to volunteer at his church and with the Memphis Food Bank. He also takes on leadership roles in school clubs including the Modern Film Club and the Tempo Club.
