James Lucas - Cordova High School

Winner in General Scholarship on March 6th, 2011

James, a senior, is a top student who excels in every academic area. He holds a 4.47 weighted grade point average and scored 28 on the ACT. He currently is ranked 11th in a senior class of 420 students. He has earned a spot on the Distinguished Honor Roll since the ninth grade. He also received the Memphis City Schools’ William H. Sweet Award for Academic Excellence three consecutive years. Based on scores on Advanced Placement exams, James was named an AP Scholar. A well-rounded student, James has been a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. He was selected as section leader for the Jazz, Marching and Concert Bands. Last summer, James attended Law Camp at Lipscomb University. James is involved with YPCO (Young People Creating Opportunities), a non-profit organization that promotes community service. He has volunteered more than 20 hours of community service with this organization and more than 72 hours with the Cordova Public Library. Since the age of 12, James has been a secondary caregiver for his father, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. Despite taking on this role, which often required handling “grown-up” responsibilities, James was determined to take the most demanding courses in a college preparatory curriculum. He has maintained top grades and balanced his difficult course load with community service and a commitment to his family.
