
Winner in English & Literature on February 28th, 2010
Lori, a senior, is an outstanding student, writer and editor. She holds a 4.3 weighted grade point average and scored 30 on the ACT. She received a 35 on the English portion of the test and a 33 on the Reading section. She has been recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar. Lori has taken Honors English and AP English Language. She currently is taking AP English Literature. She received the class Excellence Award in English. She also earned the highest average awards in AP European History, French II and French III Honors. Lori is a valued member of the school's newspaper staff. Her journalism advisor said, "Within the first week, I realized Lori was special. On the first writing assignment, she turned in an almost perfect paper. I quickly thought she would be a very good copy editor. Her knowledge of grammar is incredible and she has a great style with words." During her high school career, Lori has assumed several leadership positions. She is president of the National Honor Society, secretary of the French Club and vice president of the National French Honor Society. In addition, she is a Student Ambassador, Senior Retreat Leader and member of the Honor Council. Lori also is a member of Model United Nations, Teens for Life, Mock Trial, Bridge Builders and Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. Lori has a passion for service. She regularly supports Life Blood, the Memphis Humane Society and Life Chain. She traveled to Washington with the school's Teens for Life group for the Annual March for Life. Lori also is backstage technical director for the theatre program. She works directly under the theatre department chair who said, "We couldn't put on the many productions we have without Lori's help. She is a hard worker, smart and anticipates the needs of the directors and cast. She is an integral part of our success." Away from school, Lori has earned her Black Belt in Shotokan Karate after four years of training. The confidence and leadership skills she found through martial arts have influenced her academic and professional performance.
